What Should Be In Your Grooming Kit?
Along with feeding and exercise, grooming plays a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of your horse. Not only does grooming promote healthy skin and improves circulation, it also gives you a great opportunity to check your horse over for any lumps, bumps, swellings and any skin issues.
In this guide we are going to discuss the different types of grooming brushes and their specific uses. Remember the right brushes can make all the difference!
So, What Do You Need in Your Grooming Kit
Most grooming kits will contain:
- Curry Comb – is a short, toothed comb made from rubber or plastic that will loosen dirt, mud and shedding hair. Use in a circular motion in the same direction the hair grows, along the neck and body to help stimulate the skin and promote natural oil production.
- Dandy Brush – has stiff, long bristles made of natural or plastic fibres that catch the loose dirt and hair that has been brought to the surface by the curry comb. Great for removing stubborn dirt, mud and sweat marks. Start from the neck and work your way down.
- Flick Brush – have extra long bristles about half inch longer that a standard body brush. These brushes have been designed to literally ‘flick’ dirt off the horse.
- Body Brush – has softer bristles and is used to remove the finer dirt particles and the dust from your horse’s coat. Great for sensitive areas. The body brush helps distribute natural oils for a healthy shine.
- Mane and Tail Brush – will help remove knots and detangle hair. Brush gently to avoid breaking or pulling out the hair. Always start at the bottom and work your way up, working tangles out as you go.
- Face Brush – small and has super soft bristles, perfect for removing dirt, and dust from your horse’s sensitive face, including eyes, ears and muzzle.
- Hoof Pick – sturdy and strong made from stainless steel metal with a comfortable handle that makes it easy to use. Some will have a brush made with stiff bristles perfect for removing dirt from the hoof.
- Sweat Scraper – consists of a handle and a rubber blade, made in either plastic or metal form. Designed to remove sweat, water and excess hair. Helps speed up the drying process.
- Soft Cloth or Sponge – perfect for cleaning sensitive areas like the face, ears and around the eyes.
Conclusion
Using the right brushes in the correct order will ensure your horse is happy, healthy and incredibly shiny. Happy grooming!
